# Spending

> Understand recorded spending, category totals, comparisons and the transactions behind them.

Spending groups your recorded activity by category or merchant. Choose accounts and a period, then open a group to inspect the payments behind its total.

## What counts

The reporting calculation accounts for accepted classifications, transfers, refunds, exclusions, reporting splits and payments assigned to covered months. A bank transaction's original amount and date do not always describe its reporting contribution.

For example, a single annual payment can be assigned to the months it covers. That changes monthly reporting without changing the original bank payment.

## Compare periods

A comparison needs enough evidence for both periods. Missing months and incomplete records are not zero-spending periods. Resolve the relevant Review items and check the comparison's coverage before drawing conclusions.

## Ask your assistant

```text theme={null}
Explain my recorded spending for last month. Use Geldee's monthly summary,
check coverage first, and separate recorded facts from anything uncertain.
```

Your connection needs the relevant summary permission. Transaction descriptions require a separate permission. For an all-workspace total, use the canonical summary rather than adding a partial page of transactions.
